The Florida League of Cities honored State Senator Wilton Simpson this morning with its 2013 Legislative Appreciation Award.
The League, which represents more than 400 Florida cities, towns and villages, recognized Simpson as a legislator who, during the 2013 legislative session, consistently voted to secure home rule powers for cities in the state.
In addition to supporting League positions, Simpson proposed amendments to prevent preemptions and unfunded mandates, as well as worked behind-the-scenes to rally support for League positions. In 2013, one of the League’s biggest legislative push was for sweeping reforms in civil pensions and disability presumption.
“The Florida League of Cities and its lobbying team are proud to recognize Sen. Simpson for his support,” said Florida League of Cities Legislative Director Scott Dudley in a statement. “He believes the level of government closest to the people should make the decisions that affect the quality of life of the citizens they have been elected to represent.”
“I am very humbled to receive this award,” responded Simpson on news of the award. “The ability of our local governments to respond to the needs of constituents is of the utmost importance, and I am a strong supporter of fewer mandates from the state level that would impede that ability.”
